Villas in Palakkad

Traditional Kerala Style House.

The concept of interlocking bricks is relatively unfamiliar to a significant portion of the population in my state of Kerala. This lack of awareness might stem from a general resistance to adopting new ideas and technologies. This tendency to reject the new can also be observed when it comes to introducing innovative construction methods like interlocking bricks. When discussing interlocking bricks, the term itself provides some insight into their function. These bricks are designed to lock together with one another, creating a robust and interconnected wall structure. Unlike traditional bricks, interlocking bricks don’t require the use of cement for bonding.

This unique feature has captured the attention of those in the construction industry and beyond. In my attempts to gather expert opinions on the utility of interlocking bricks, a clear pattern of response has emerged. The initial reaction from the individuals I approached tends to be one of skepticism or uncertainty. This reaction underscores the challenges of introducing novel concepts in regions where established practices hold sway. Nonetheless, interlocking brick construction is steadily gaining traction in Kerala. This is primarily due to its potential to significantly reduce construction costs, both in terms of materials and labor. The streamlined construction process made possible by interlocking bricks also contributes to quicker project completion times.

As more success stories and demonstrations of the benefits of this approach emerge, it is likely that the resistance to change will gradually diminish. In conclusion, the relative obscurity of interlocking bricks in Kerala can be attributed to a general aversion to new ideas. However, the potential advantages of this construction method, such as enhanced durability, cost-effectiveness, and time savings, are gradually becoming more apparent and are contributing to a shift in perception within the construction industry and the larger community.
